At the WMHS Spring Concert on Wednesday, May 1 2019, Bianca Zanni was recognized as this years recipient of the Meghan Burnett Instrument Fellowship Award. Bianca will be a Junior at WMHS this fall where she is active in Wind Ensemble, Marching Band, Chamber Singers and She Major. She has made the senior district chorus and is also a marching band section leader.
Named for 2018 graduate Meghan Burnett, the award provides funds towards the purchase of a musical instrument for a Wakefield Memorial High School musician. This fellowship is awarded annually through the fund raising efforts of the Meghan Burnett Foundation. A few weeks ago (July) Bianca was able to schedule a trip into Boston with her parents and Mr Bankert to make the final selection. After narrowing the search down to (4) excellent trumpets, she found the horn with the best sound to be a beautiful 1974 Bach Stradivarius trumpet .
The purpose of this fellowship is to make it possible for a student involved in the music program to purchase a better instrument and thus improve and grow as a musician. More broadly, the program aims to kindle the love of music in young musicians so that they continue to play and love music throughout their lives.
To qualify for the award the musician must be a Freshman or Sophomore student at WMHS, involved in any of the instrumental music ensembles there and be committed to continuing to be involved in the music program for the entirety of High School and beyond. The Meghan Burnett Foundation works with the Music Director to choose the recipient based on their knowledge of the musician, taking into account their musicianship, motivation, character, dedication, and any other relevant factors as deemed appropriate by the foundation.
